Cable technology provides a high-bandwidth, always-on connection to
the Internet.
Advantages
Easy to set up and available everywhere there's a cable TV.
Faster connection (up to 27 mbps) via a cable modem.
Cable Internet access is as cheap as cable TV.
Safer connection from hackers. Security similar to
the traditional
dial-up modem connection.
Disadvantages
Installation process is often both time-consuming and costly.
Some areas of the country does not have access to cable
Internet connections. Some local cable company doesn't offer Internet access.
Connection speeds
range from 500 kbps to 2 mbps. The performance is dependent on how many other local
customers are connected to the Internet at the same time since the access speed is
divided up. Ask your cable provider if they guarantees minimum
upload/download speeds.
While it's true that cable Net access is relatively cheap--as
little as $39 per month. Some of the additional costs includes installation costs, a setup fee
(of around $75), and a network interface card ($30 to $50). Sometimes the use of a cable modem is included in the monthly fee, but
not always. This little piece of hardware can cost $200 to $300.
Less secure for neighborhood connection. Neighbors have easy access to
all computers connected in the neighborhood. Make
sure you disable Windows' file- and print-sharing features, and install some AntiVirus
and firewall software.
